History of 972 area code

Area code 972 is a North American area code for telephone numbers in Dallas in the U.S. state of Texas. The area code also covers a majority of the eastern region of the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex. It is in a complex overlay plan with numbering plan area 214, 469, and 945.

This area code was created in 1995 when 214 area outside Dallas and Dallas County was divided. After two years of the split, both NPAs were near depletion thus on July 1, 1999 area code 469 was assigned as an overlay to provide relief in the area. This removed the 214/972 boundary and it necessitated the dialling of ten-digit for all calls. On January 15, 2021 telephone numbers were assigned to area code 945 which will be a forth area code in the overlay plan and it will begin service once all the NPAs in the area has ran out of numbers.
