History of 219 area code

Area code 219 is a telephone area code in the North American Numbering Plan for the U.S state of Indiana. Areas covered includes the Counties of Lake, Porter, La Porte, Newton, and Jasper. In 1947 when area codes were assigned to states by the American Telephone and Telegraph, Indiana was assigned to two area codes, 317 and 812. Area code 317 covered the northern two-thirds of the state while area code 812 served the southern third.

In 1948 317 was split forming area code 219 which was assigned to the northern third of Indiana counting Gary, Hammond, East Chicago, South Bend, Elkhart and Fort Wayne. 219 was close to exhaustion, after everything that could be done to stop a need of a new area code it was decided that it should be split into three area codes creating area codes 574 and 260.
